TOURS: Self-guided Tour Lake Como

Lake Como: Cernobbio, Val d'Intelvi and Bellagio (three centre based).

"Quel ramo del lago di Como, che volge a mezzogiorno, tra due catene non interrotte di monti ...", calls Alessandro Manzoni's most famous novel "I Promessi Sposi" .....

day one - Arrival and transfer from the Airport to the Hotel Terzo Crotto in Cernobbio (lake Como) www.terzocrotto.it

day two - Cernobbio, loop ride. Mostly flat ride. Some rolling hills. Tour of the three lakes: lake Como, lake Lugano (Switzerland), lake Maggiore. Today's ride will take you into Switzerland, cycling along lake Lugano's most quiet roads crossing the Italian and Swiss border many times. Riding along lake Lugano's side roads, you can enjoy the atmosphere of quaint Swiss little towns. Stopping for coffee in Pontetresa (almost half way into today's ride), you then carry on back into Italy, looping back from the border station of Pontecremenaga to Cernobbio.
Accomodation: Albergo Terzo Crotto in Cernobbio www.terzocrotto.it

day three - Cernobbio, transfer bicycle ride to Val d'Intelvi. La Val d'Intelvi is the very first hill of the Pro's Giro di Lombardia! Leaving Cernobbio, today’s ride will ultimately lead you to the Intelvi Valley .... riding along the lake to the Swiss town of Lugano, the views open up to Monte San Salvatore just in front of you and Monte Sighignola across the lake on top of Campione d'Italia. Passing luxurious villas and stunning gardens, you come back into Italy at Gandria. More lake side riding will take you to the lake village of Porlezza an ideal coffee or lunch stop sitting at tables overlooking mountains and of course the lake. A little further on, you start the 7 km climb to San Fedele d'Intelvi. Here you have the option to do a detour to the village of Pigra, nested on the side of the mountain with from the most stunning view of all Lake Como.

Just the time to take a few snapshots before embarking on the fast winding switchback descent on an extremely scenic road, leaving Monte Generoso on your left and almost literally falling onto lake Lugano. Cycling to Lake Como, you will take the scenic lower road, passing famous villas such as Villa d’Este and the residence of George Clooney. Just before Argegno, you start the climb back up to Schignano, in time for an afternoon aperitivo taken in the gardens of your Hotel.

day five - Schignano (Val d'Intelvi) to Bellagio. A wonderful ride taking in the highlights of Bellagio and the little church of the Madonna di Ghisallo. Leaving your Hotel, you’ll descend onto lake Como, riding through San Fedele on a fast descent down to Argegno. Taking the lower road along the lake, passing first near Villa Balbianello in Lenno and then in front of the botanical Gardens of Villa Carlotta, you reach Cadenabbia, from where you take a short ferry ride over to Bellagio. Here you set some time aside to explore this idyllic little town, with its many lake-side cafeterias and little restaurants. Now the fun begins, as you gradually climb up to Magreglio, the famous cyclists mecca where you can admire the little chapel of Madonna di Ghisallo, dedicated to all cyclists. Here also you can visit the "Museo del Ciclismo", with regalia of the most famous world riders. You can top your ride with a Panino alla Pantani from the local bar! The carefree descent will take you to Valbrona, from where the views of the Lecco branch of lake Como opens up in front of you. Here at the Rifugio della Colma, you can indulge in some local specialities such as Polenta with local cheese, home made pasta with Porcini mushrooms and other delicacies whilst enjoying the outstanding views of the Lombard Alps! After a winding descent (or alternatively descending the famous "Muro di Sormano"), you will reach Asso from where you climb back up to Magreglio (Madonna del Ghisallo) and then down to Bellagio.

From here, a short ride will take you to Cernobbio going through the Gardens of Villa Olmo, facing the lake. This is your last evening in Italy, and there is a great choice of local restaurants in the little square facing the lake, where you can celebrate the end of a great cycling holiday.
